What is Point by Paul Smith?

A study in variegation, Point explores scale, density, rhythm, color, and proportion. All built from a single square unit, the geometric patterns range from traditional to modern in an imaginative display of Paul Smith’s signature “classics with a twist” style.

Dense rayon yarns in warp and weft are secured by a fine nylon binder, forming a gridded texture reminiscent of needlepoint embroidery or traditional grospoint transport cloth. Chosen for its clarity of color, this balanced construction highlights semi-lustrous rayon yarns in a wide array of rich hues including persimmon, mustard, loden, burnt sienna, and ultramarine. Whereas the first group of eleven featured five distinct stripes, the bold colors—crimson, mandarin, citrus, grass, cyan, and cobalt — work around a single design that allows for expanses of solid color. These truly clear colors result from Point's unique construction, in which superfine nylon threads bind substantial rayon yarns with an almost metallic luster. The resulting woven structure is notable for its satisfying weight and tactile quality, as well as a gridded texture reminiscent of needlepoint.

Using traditional apparel as a springboard, Paul Smith has generated a diverse range of “classics with a twist.”. Never plain or generic, each stripe is remarkable for its sense of rhythm, scale, proportion, density, and color. Paul Smith’s ability to combine eccentric detail with the highest standard of craftsmanship has made him among the most successful fashion designers in British history.

What is Houndstooth by Paul Smith?

Maharam and Paul Smith introduce Houndstooth, a jacquard upholstery textile that vividly blends two classic apparel motifs: houndstooth and windowpane plaid. Based on a silk fabric used in Paul Smith Women’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection, Houndstooth morphs and condenses an arrangement of jagged rhombus motifs enlarged to near-digital effect while a spacious underlying plaid traces recti-linearity within the larger permutation.

The houndstooth pattern originated as a duotone woven cloth worn by shepherds in the Scottish Lowlands during the 1800’s. Unlike other patterned wool garments demarking clan association, houndstooth’s designation was universal. Paul Smith and Maharam’s version is a modern variation on traditional houndstooth. Fine lustrous cotton offers a graphic rendering that mimics the coarse edges of homespun wool while imaginative color pairings like peacock with olive, bright persimmon with fuchsia, or chalk with acid yellow demonstrate Paul Smith’s signature use of color.
